Coming Home: Building Community in a Changing World

Our All-New Permanent Exhibit of Regional History with Changing Displays

Entrance We have all come here from somewhere else. For three centuries new families have come to the Waterbury region. Some came for opportunity, some to escape troubles: war, persecution, and poverty. Enter our new history exhibit and be transported into the worlds of colonial farmers (1680-1800), factory workers and industrial magnates (1800 - 1950), and citizens of our new world (1950 - today).

Risky BusinessForget any ideas that you have about passively looking and reading. This exhibit is packed with hands-on activities designed to entertain while educating. Build a village and then compare it to what the early settlers actually built. Choose your possessions and compare them to the valuations assigned in the 18th century. Work the production line and realize the stress of making a button in 30 seconds. Play Risky Business, an actual pinball game, but be sure to avoid the pitfalls of floods, fires, and army contracts or you'll go bankrupt! You’ll meet people from our past and hear their stories, but this is not just the story of our past. This is a story of America’s future! Click here for more information.

Speak to Me: The Connecticut Biennial 2008

On Exhibition: September 19, 2008 – January 11, 2009

Original Sin Join us and 18 artists whose work will "Speak to You." Ted Efremoff put on a suit and traveled the streets of Waterbury asking people to not only to speak to him but to affix their thoughts to his suit. See the suit, speak to the artist. Peter Waite’s sculpture Monster From the Deep speaks to our shared memory of popular culture. Steven DiGiovanni’s painting, Original Sin, addresses the nature of close relationships and how they change with time. Guest curators Janice LaMotta and Salvatore Scalora traveled the state to search out the newest and most forward-looking art being produced. From painting to video, from installation to performance, it will SPEAK TO YOU.

Artists in the exhibition: Krysten Bailey, Diane Brainerd, Ellen Carey, Deborah Dancy, Steven DiGiovanni, Ted Efremoff, Sam Ekwurtzel, Letty Fonteyne, Gene Gort, Zbigniew Grzyb, Nathan Lewis, Christopher Mir, Olu Oguibe, Yolando Vasquez Petrocelli, Caleb Portfolio, Kerri Quirk, Nelson Ramirez, and Peter Waite.

Pride and Duty: The Waterbury Fire Department

On Exhibition: October 2, 2008 - December 28, 2008

City Hall In celebration of The Big Read 2008, the museum partners with the Waterbury Fire Department to tell the story of these community heroes who put their lives at risk every day. Historic photos, oral histories, and memorabilia loaned by local firefighters and their families tell the story of triumph and tragedy.

The Mattatuck Museum was established as the Mattatuck Historical Society in 1877 to preserve the history of that part of Connecticut “anciently known as Mattatuck” – roughly the ten town region surrounding present-day Waterbury. In the 1960s the Historical Society expanded its mission to “collect and exhibit the works of Connecticut artists.” The American Association of Museum accredited the museum in 1976, one of the first in the state to meet that standard.

The Mattatuck Museum Arts & History Center is known for engaging its community in an understanding of the past and providing vision and leadership for the future through its exhibits and collections of national significance that interpret the history of the region and the art of Connecticut.

Mission: The Mattatuck Museum Arts & History Center provides our community with professional scholarship, preservation, and historical programming about our heritage, stimulates the interest in the fine and decorative arts of Connecticut by showcasing their highest quality and expression, and encourages an appreciation of the humanities and the fine arts through its collections, exhibits and programs.
